Bodour Al Qasimi: the forum serves as a platform to reinforce government efforts to attract investors Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), is organising ‘Sharjah Forum: Future Opportunities and Challenges’, set to take place on November 2nd, in the presence of a number of chairpersons, CEOs and directors generals of the Sharjah Government’s authorities and departments. Held for the first time, the forum aims to provide a platform for decision makers in Government sector in the emirate of Sharjah to present the challenges facing the development of the investment sector in the emirate and to discuss the opportunities which contribute to reinforcing the position of Sharjah as a leading investment hub in the region and drive economic competitiveness in the long run. Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), stressed the importance of holding this first of its kind forum in the emirate of Sharjah, with the aim to reinforce intra-governmental cooperation to offer more facilities and incentives for investors and international firms and to jointly face challenges. She said: “We are pleased to organise this forum which brings together an elite group of decision makers in the emirate of Sharjah, whose organisations have contributed to boosting the development process in the Emirate in all areas. We hope this gathering will form an opportunity to discuss ways of developing the investment environment and utilising the elements of Sharjah to contribute, through various concerned organisations and entities, to supporting and developing the Emirate’s economy”. The forum would make use of the services rendered by government departments and entities in the Emirate to develop the investment climate, offer more competitive incentives and privileges to corporate and individual investors, and explore ways in which to encourage investors to benefit from the Emirate’s geographical location, investment offerings, and its competitiveness, in order to attract investors who can achieve the optimal risk/return balance and maintain investment growth levels within the expected rates. ‘Sharjah Forum: Future Opportunities and Challenges’ will take place in Al Jawaher Reception and Convention Centre and will include three consecutive sessions in presence of senior officials and decision makers. The first session ‘Investment Opportunities in Sharjah’ will bring together a group of leaders in the government sector in Sharjah to present investment opportunities and the Emirate’s diversified economy and discuss the latest developments in this regard. Presentations will be delivered by tourism, finance, industry, education, healthcare and environment sectors, as Sharjah is a regional leader in these sectors. The panel will explore how to maintain and further boost this upward trend in these sectors. The second session ‘Correlating with Decision Makers’ will discuss the challenges facing decision makers in their efforts to take new steps to attract regional and international investments and explore how to stimulate the economic growth in the region by addressing these challenges, reducing risks and encourage future investment. The third and closing session will present a study on investment and competitiveness in Sharjah conducted by Deloitte. Titled ‘Building an Attractive Investment Environment Together’, the session will focus on many points related to the results of the study and will outline the approach and benchmarking used in the research and the key results with regard to the Emirate’s competitiveness at the international level. Shurooq was established in 2009 with the aim of achieving social, cultural, environmental and economic development on the basis of Sharjah's distinct Arab and Islamic identity, and to encourage investment by adopting the best international standards in providing quality services that help attract investors from the region and the world. The Authority’s key mission is to provide facilities and incentives to help overcome obstacles facing investment activities in the Emirate, evaluate tourism and investment related infrastructure projects, and lay down the necessary plans to complete such projects. In recognition of its overall accomplishments, Shurooq was named The Banking Awards 2013 and 2014 - FDI Agency of the Year in the MENA region, in The European’s Global Banking and Finance Awards.
